LED lighting upgrades for businesses: beyond replacing lamps

How to plan an LED retrofit in offices, hotels, retail and warehouses so it improves light quality and lowers operating costs.

Why upgrade to LED

LED fixtures use considerably less electricity than older fluorescent, halogen or metal halide lighting for similar light output, and last much longer, which reduces replacement and maintenance work.

In buildings with long operating hours, such as hotels, retail and warehouses, lighting is often one of the fastest energy upgrades to implement.

Light quality matters

A good retrofit is not only about watts. Specify illuminance levels per space, colour temperature, colour rendering (CRI) and glare control (UGR) according to the use of each area.

Retail and hospitality spaces in particular benefit from careful colour rendering and accent lighting.

Controls multiply the savings

Presence sensors, daylight dimming and scheduling reduce consumption further, especially in corridors, parking areas, storage and meeting rooms. DALI or wireless control systems can also connect to building management.

Planning the project

Start with a survey of existing fixtures and operating hours, then compare options on the same specification. Check warranties, driver quality, emergency lighting requirements and the availability of matching spare fixtures for the future.
